This extension to the well known board game Risk was made by my brother Nico Schoonderwoerd and me Cosander Schoonderwoerd somewhere in the early nineties. On a trip to Estonia my brother had bought several world maps including the one which is on top of this page. By using wallpaper glue we managed to glue that map onto a wooden board. With a thick pencil we separated the world into 11 continents with a total of 72 areas.
To displace armies over see we make use of boats. As you can very faintly see in the picture, the map is divided into blocks of 10 degrees lattitude and longitude (Click on the picture to see a more detailed in-action picture). These blocks are used to restrict the movement of boats. Every existing boat can move up to five blocks per turn. The building of a boat costs two armies, a boat can contain a maximum of ten armies.
In contrast with Risk, Risk++ is not ended when one of the players fulfills a conquest. Every player receives a new conquest card, and the game continues. The conquests of Risk++ are simpler than in Risk. The capture of the The United States including Hawaii is an example of one such conquest. Before the game the players agree to stop playing as soon as a conquest is made after some late hour. The goal of Risk++ is to complete as many conquest as possible. If there is more than one player with the highest number of fulfilled conquests, triumph is shared.
The extended rules are split into two parts. One part concerns the general rules and the other is about the geographical information. These documents are also available in word format (riskrulesnico.doc and riskgeonico.doc), latex format (riskrules.tex and riskgeo.tex) and in postscript format (riskrules.ps.gz and riskgeo.ps.gz).
For the boats we made use of ministack.
By now several copies of the game are in use. And many people participated. One of them (Rutger Koperdraad) keeps track of the results and Hall of Fame
Our thanks to him!
